Our Primary 3D Printer

Lulzbot Taz 6 - Our Primary 3D Printer

The Lulzbot Taz 6 is sold by Aleph Objects. Inc for $2,500.00 (at the time of writing).  We did some fairly extensive research and testing before finally going with a Lulzbot printer.  The Taz 6 is in the upper price range of consumer-grade 3D printers but it checks a lot of boxes in terms of features, support, and reliability.

Why We Went with the Lulzbot Taz 6

The vast number of 3D printers on the market make the process of picking a 3D printer somewhat daunting.  There are many many high quality, affordable, and reliable 3D printers that can do most, if not all, of what a Taz 6 can do.  When people ask me what 3D printer to buy, I first tell them to make a list of their requirements ordered-by importance.  Then I'll recommend that they purchase the best printer they can afford that meets the most requirements possible.  The following were some important requirements Make4 had in selecting a 3D printer.

  • Print Volume/Quality - Most reputable printers today can print fairly high quality prints.  The difference in printing quality of other FDM printers in the same price range as the Taz 6 was negligible.  What made the Taz standout was the combination of high print quality along with a large build volume.  The Taz 6 build area is one of the largest in the consumer-grade printing market.
  • Reliability - Our biggest requirement was that we wanted a printer that wouldn't break down, rarely failed a print, and didn't require extensive maintenance or tweaking.  I can say without a doubt, the Taz 6 has been extremely reliable and consistent.
  • Customer Support - If and when an issue arose with our printer we didn't want to see extended down time while waiting to resolve a problem.  Taz 6 support has been great.  Our printer had a Z-axis issue and support spent hours with us on the phone until the issue was resolved

The fact that the Aleph Objects manufactures their 3D printers with their own printers says a whole lot more (to me) than any marketing literature or product reviews.  They trust the reliability of their printers to the point that they're willing to make them a vital piece of their manufacturing process.  When a printer goes down, there manufacturing capacity goes down.  When Aleph Objects improves their printers they not only create a better product but they improve their own manufacturing.  This constant feedback loop is one of the reasons the Taz 6 is so reliable.
