Custom Wooden PC - Prototype 2 Build

I finally uploaded the second prototype build pictures. The third (and final) prototype has finished CAD design and should be built in the next 10 days. Please keep in mind that prototype 2 has some rough edges and short-sighted hacks that have been cleaned up in the latest design. Follow the project if you want to be notified when it gets updated.

Empty Case

This case is really large and has 13 PCI slots. It's approximately 22 inches high and 17 inches deep. The case doesn't use any wood-style screws (pointed). Everything is bolted together with nuts & washes. This extends the life of the case.

 

 

 

Case Feet

The case feet are 3D printed.  They bolt directly into the bottom of the case.  The bolts are recessed on the inside of the case.

 

 

 

 

 

Motherboard Mount & Spacers

The Supermicro Motherboard installed in this case has 15 mounting points.  The mounts are 3D printed and hold the motherboard extremely tight.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Motherboard Installed

This is a very large motherboard (about 13.5 by 15 inches).  I wanted to keep the case as small as possible so that it was manageable as a workstation.  I would not have gone any smaller.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Cable Management

I used several different cable management clamps to hold down the PSU, SATA and other cables.  All of these are 3D printed.

 

 

 

2.5 Inch Drive Mounts

This is a 3D printed mount for 2.5 inch drives.  The newest prototype uses a completely new and much nicer system.

 

 

 

 

 

Nvidia GTX 1070, Wireless AC, USB 3.0

I'm going to be using this machine for both gaming and work.  This Supermicro board does not have native USB 3.0 support.  

 

 

 

Mounting & Installing the Acrylic Window

The mounts for the window are 3D printed and also serve as the main access point for getting into the case after it's built.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Complete!

Overall everything came together pretty well.  I have been using this as my main machine for about a month without issue.  The 3rd prototype is quite a bit more sophisticated and has less hack-ish parts (like the 2.5 drive mount).  If you're interested being notified when I upload the pictures for the 3rd prototype just follow this project.
